The Power of Pausing: Why Stepping Away from the Screen Makes Us Better at Logistics

In the logistics world, there’s no such thing as “off hours.” Our clients operate on tight timelines, across time zones, on weekends and holidays. And we’re right there with them. Whether it's a flurry of Teams messages, texts at odd hours, or late-night phone calls from a vessel Captain docking on the Great Lakes, constant communication is at the heart of what we do at Pickands Mather.
We wouldn’t have it any other way. But even in an industry that never sleeps, there’s real value in pausing.
Always On, Always Connected
Technology seems to fill our days. Hundreds of emails, chat pings, and virtual meetings dominate our screens. And for good reasons. Logistics is about keeping things moving, solving problems in real time, and ensuring our customers are always a step ahead. But in the rush of digital communication, important details can get buried. Messages get missed, context fades, and what should be a two-minute conversation can sometimes drag into a week-long email chain.
That’s why we believe in stepping back—literally.
Why Face-to-Face Still Matters
In-person conversations cut through the noise. There’s a clarity and focus that happens when you're not multitasking, not toggling between screens or notifications. Whether it’s sitting down with a coworker or meeting a client face-to-face, direct conversations allow us to solve problems faster and get to the heart of an issue without delay.
One of our favorite examples of this is our Noon Day gatherings each year. A simple, intentional pause we build into one week in August during our busy summer season. It’s a chance to step back, connect and realign with all players in the supply chain.
Last week, following a dinner for Noon Day, our team helped spark a valuable connection between a client and a new transportation provider. Instead of relying on email threads or virtual introductions, it began with a simple handshake that initiated conversation over dessert. That casual exchange quickly grew into a meaningful discussion about future collaboration. No screens, no slide decks - just real people connecting in real time. The result: the start of a partnership built on trust and genuine rapport, creating long-term value for both sides.
Real Connection Builds Better Logistics
We’ll always prioritize fast, effective communication. It’s how we stay agile and responsive to our clients, 24/7. But we also know that some of the best solutions come from slowing down and really taking time to connect without a screen in the way.
At Pickands Mather, we combine the speed of digital with the strength of human connection. Because when we take the time to talk, face-to-face, we become better listeners, better problem solvers, and ultimately, better partners.
